Proposed Resolution Opposing Involuntary Individual Isolation of Youth in Carceral and Detention Settings: Call for Comments

The American Psychological Association seeks comments from all interested individuals and groups – including psychologists, mental health professionals, researchers, carceral facility staff, carceral facility detainees and their families, APA elected and appointed leaders, and the general public – on the Proposed Resolution Opposing Involuntary Individual Isolation of Youth in Carceral and Detention Settings.  This proposed resolution was submitted as a Council New Business Item by Division 41 Council Representatives Jason Cantone and Margaret Bull Kovera.

If approved by Council, this proposed resolution will be considered APA policy and APA will then advocate for approaches, consistent with the resolution, that foster positive youth development and behavior changes in adolescence, and advocate against the use of solitary confinement in juvenile justice settings.

The text of the resolution and a portal to receive comments is available until December 20, 2023 at: https://apps.apa.org/CommentCentral2/default.aspx?site=115

Announcing the 2024 Law and Human Behavior Reviewer Mentoring Program

Have you always wondered how people get to be reviewers for prestigious journals? Are you interested in becoming a reviewer for Law and Human Behavior, the official journal of AP-LS, but don’t know what that means or how to get training and experience with providing strong reviews? Do you have limited or no access to a mentor that can help provide this type of experience? If so, now is your chance to develop your reviewer skills!

Incoming Editor, Dave DeMatteo and the incoming LHB editorial team are continuing Reviewer Mentoring Program in 2024, first instituted under outgoing editor, Brad McAuliff. The program will kick off at the AP-LS Conference in Los Angeles with an in-person training and will continue throughout the rest of the year.

The program is designed to provide advanced graduate students (in 3rd, 4th or 5th years of study) and ECPs (within 10 years of last terminal degree) with training and mentoring specifically in conducting strong peer reviews.

We will be selecting a small group of Reviewers to participate in the workshop in March, 2024, and we will match those participants with Reviewer Mentors. Mentees will be assigned 1-2 manuscript to review throughout 2024, under the guidance of their Reviewer Mentor.

If you would like to be considered for this program, please complete the application at this link by December 31, 2023.

If you have questions about the program, please contact our Associate Editor, Jenni Cox (jennifer.m.cox@ua.edu) or Incoming Editor in Chief, Dave DeMatteo (dsd25@drexel.edu).

Practice Committee's Mentorship Award: Call for Nominations

The Practice Committee’s Award for Outstanding Practitioner Mentoring for the Elimination of Racial, Ethnic, and Cultural (REC) Disparities recognizes practitioners whose mentorship helps reduce REC disparities in psychology and the law.  Practitioners are in a unique position to offer education, assessment, intervention and advocacy on issues of REC disparities, racism, and discrimination in the legal systems.  However, a limited body of research, lack of practice guidelines on REC integration in forensic practice, and low representation of Black, Indigenous, People Of Color (BIPOC) professionals, limit such efforts.  Mentorship of emerging practitioners in psychology and the law on such issues can bridge the gap of knowledge, application, and BIPOC representation in the field.

The Practice Committee is currently accepting award nominations for 2024. Additional information about the award can be found at:  https://ap-ls.org/awards/. Nomination packages are due January 15th and should be emailed to the chair of the award subcommittee at practice@ap-ls.org.

Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring in the Field of Psychology and Law: Call for Nominations

Each year the AP-LS Teaching, Training, and Careers (TTC) Committee confers two awards for outstanding teaching and mentoring. These awards recognize teaching excellence in the field of psychology and law in a variety of contexts, specifically through the Outstanding Teaching and Mentoring Award and the Early Career Teaching and Mentoring Award

For more information about the awards, eligibility, and how to nominate yourself or others, please click: Teaching and Mentoring Awards

This year the TTC Committee is specifically soliciting nominations for individuals from a program/department that is undergraduate-only or MA-terminus (i.e., Category 2).

Winners will be announced at the 2024 AP-LS Conference. Award recipients receive $500, a plaque at the AP-LS conference, and the option to serve as a guest columnist for the AP-LS Newsletter.

Nominations are due by December 15, 2023. Nominations should be emailed to: ttc@apls.org

Call for Book Proposals

The American Psychology-Law Society invites proposals for new titles in its book series, which is now published by APA Books. We publish authored and edited volumes on current issues at the intersection of psychology and law. Books are typically a state of the science synthesis of a body of existing research with implications for practice and/or policy. Authors and editors should have a substantial and recent track record of publication and/or practice in psychology or law, and at least one should hold a doctorate in psychology or closely related behavioral science. If you have a proposal for a new book in the series or you would simply like more information, reach out to a member of the editorial team. We would be happy to tell you more.
